The providers are an informal uncertified workforce, no certifications, no insurance. Most are average, the good ones are booked and busy, and eventually start messing up under the workload. There’s a lot of no shows and communication breakdown due to unprofessionalism. Trust is a challenge, and there’s no assumption of liability or guarantees. When there is a need to change parts, you stand the risk of getting fake or overpriced parts. Due to the fragmentation, there is lack of transparency in the pricing as well as what a high price means in terms of expectations.

Marketplaces are hard to build, even more so in emerging markets with low purchasing power parity. A couple of reasons..

• Failure is more likely (think of all the dead classifieds platforms)
• when you succeed, you might end up becoming a big brand solving problems for millions of people but not been able to extract value for the business
• price sensitivity of customers is through the roof
• Your best users on both buy and sell side have tendencies to bypass you and start offering services to each other
